Are natural resources actually finite?

Well, most pharmaceutical medications are created through chemical processes involving organic compounds. Oil is a rich source of organic compounds that are used in the manufacture of drugs. According to some reports, 99 percent of the feedstocks and reagents used in the production of pharmaceuticals come from petrochemical sources. This is a tricky question to answer, as an exact substitute for oil is nowhere on the horizon. Any switch away from it will likely require developing or discovering a suite of other raw materials that can plug the gap where oil used to be. With no crude oil, our species would survive, just as we did before crude oil.

There are 1.65 trillion barrels of proven oil reserves in the world as of 2016.The world has proven reserves equivalent to 46.6 times its annual consumption levels. This means it has about 47 years of oil left (at current consumption levels and excluding unproven reserves). Proved reserves are an accounting concept that is based on known projects, and it is not an appropriate measure for judging total resource availability in the long term.

This is compounded by the constant “ripping” away of gases from the Earth thanks to phenomena like the solar winds. As a consequence, Earth loses up to several hundred tonnes of mass every day — a net loss. When required of us, we have managed to find ways to use stuff more efficiently, find alternatives that are just as good, or, indeed, develop ways to recycle or recover stuff from other stuff if needed. We have also found ways to use materials for entirely different purposes from what we are used to using something for. “The oil industry isn’t going to collapse because we run out of oil, there’s plenty of oil left,” MacDonald said. And on the other side of the equation, demand for oil is likely to change in the coming years.

Reserves, production, prices, employment and productivity, distribution, stocks, imports and exports. Before this gradual downfall begins, however, we’ll reach a point known as peak oil. We’ve explained the main reasons above, but there is another factor to consider — the relative rarity of a resource. Who knows, there could be an effectively unlimited supply out there. Before we answer this question, we’ll need to expand on the term “proven” we mentioned earlier.

It is estimated that our proven reserves are on the order of 1.5 trillion barrels of oil, and unproven reserves are thought to be in the range of 3 trillion barrels. Last year, we consumed 31 billion barrels of oil, and at this rate of consumption, we’ve got less than 50 years worth of oil in the proven reserves, and about 97 years worth in the unproven reserves. In May, an IEA report concluded that there could be no new oil, gas or coal development if the world was to reach net zero by 2050.
